St. Joseph's Hospital, in Hancock, Michigan, was founded in 1899 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet of St. Louis, Missouri, at the request of Bishop Frederick Eis of the Diocese of Marquette. Order established in 1807; in 1870, seven Sisters of St. Joseph traveled from Carondelet, Missouri to San Francisco by railroad, then to San Diego by steamer, and to Tucson by wagon.
